Alice Through The Looking Glass Mixed Media Bottles

You may not know this, but I'm a HUGE Alice In Wonderland fan!  To celebrate the new Disney movie, Alice Through the Looking Glass,  I created a set of mixed media bottles using images of the main characters.  I had wine bottles on hand, but you could use any type of bottle for this project.  Even a set of pencil holders made out of recycled cans would look amazing.  The rule is that there are no rules!  Every bottle you make will turn out differently.  The key to my success was the DecoArt Metallic Lustres.  They add a beautiful metallic shimmer to any surface....I even painted them on lace!  Water them down or rub them on full strength, it's up to you.  Just remember to have fun, make messes and Make Your Mark!  Big hugs and write if you have a question.....

Stuff You'll Need

Wine bottles

Book pages

Americana Decoupage in Matte

DecoArt Metallic Lustres (in the colors you like)

Lace

Fabric flowers

Chandelier crystals and marker caps

Rhinestones, chain, charms

Ribbon and fabric strips

Playing cards

Spray bottle

Glue gun

Here's how:

1. Using Americana Decoupage in matte, cover a wine bottle in ripped book pages

*Always mist both sides of the paper with water to relax it first so it doesn't bubble when you decoupage

2. Print your image on book page paper and on plain paper

3. Cut the book page image about the size of a large wine label and decoupage to the bottle

4. Cut around the image on the plain paper and apply it over the book page "label"

5. Decoupage other images on the back of the bottle

*I used clocks for the White Rabbit bottle

6. & 7.  Hot glue lace and fabric flowers around the image to create a frame

8. 9. & 10. Using the Metallic Luster, paint the bottle and lace and when dry add strips of stick on rhinestones

I started with Fab Fuchsia, added Brilliant Turquoise over it and then highlighted with Gold Rush

11. & 12. Print the Queen of Hearts image and glue it to a real playing card

13. 14. & 15.  Glue a chandelier crystal to an old marker cap and then wrap it in fabric and metallic gold thread to create a decorative stopper

16.  Attach the charms to the chain

17. & 18.  Wrap the ribbon, chain and strips of fabric around the neck of the bottle and then tie the card to the end of one of the hanging strands

Alice In Wonderland Bookcase

Every once in awhile you get a bug to do something extra special......Something you might not otherwise even venture to tackle.  That was the case with this Alice In Wonderland Bookcase DIY.  I'm truly in love with this piece and even though I have no room for it in my house, I'm still going to keep it until I figure out where to put it.  My best suggestion, if you want to attempt a piece like this, is to take your time and enjoy the process.  This took me two full days and I loved every minute of it.  Just have fun, make a mess and as always remember Make Your Mark!

Stuff You'll Need

Bookcase in need of a makeover

1" x 12" pine planks to repair the shelf and make a pediment

Masking tape

Paintbrush

Americana Decor Chalky Finish in your color scheme

*I used Everlasting, Romance, Innocence, Treasure & Carbon

Drill

Four 1" x 1" x 5" legs

8 "L" brackets

1" screws

Matte Americana Decoupage

Americana Decor Clear Crème Wax

Americana Decor Golden Brown Crème Wax

Butterfly and foliage printouts

Metallic Gold Paint Pen

Optional: Jigsaw, Wood glue, Sander, Metallic Gold Paint

1.  Attach 1" x 12" pine board to the base of the bookcase if you need to 

*my shelf did not have a base

2. Attach the four 1" x 1" x 5" legs to the base using "L" brackets and 1" screws

3.  The repaired bookcase ready for paint

4. Paint the inside and sides of the bookcase in Everlasting (white)

5.  Paint the very top of the bookcase and the base of the shelf in Treasure

*refer to the beauty shots if you need to see exactly where I painted

6. Paint the face of each shelf in Romance red

7.  Paint the base of each shelf in Innocence pink

8. & 9. Measure and draw stripes on each side of the bookcase 

10. & 11.  Tape and loosely paint the stripes in Carbon

*no need to be perfect, we want this to look aged

12.  Paint the legs black

13. & 14.  If you have extra details on your bookcase, tape and paint Everlasting and Carbon stripes along the front

*I realize not all bookcases have this detail, but there might be a spot that you can incorporate this on yours

15. Measure, tape and paint Romance red strips on the back of the cabinet from top to bottom

16. 17. & 18.  Trace, cut and sand a pediment from a piece of 1" x 12" pine wood

HERE is a pattern for the pediment that I used

19. & 20. Paint Romance and Everlasting stripes on the pediment

21. Paint the ball on top of the pediment in metallic gold or black

22.  With wood glue, attach the pediment to the top center of the bookcase 

23. Paint the entire bookcase in Americana Decor Clear Crème Wax and let dry

24.  Paint sections in the Americana Decor Golden Brown Crème Wax and wipe as you go to create an antique, aged look

25. 26. & 27.  Print, cut and mist butterflies and foliage images to decoupage on the inside of the sides of the shelf

28. Decoupage the images in place using Americana Decoupage Matte

29. & 30.  Edge the pediment and the top of the bookcase with a metallic gold paint pen

Wonderland Blazer Makeover

Why not add a little Alice In Wonderland meets harajuku girl to your Valentine's Day wardrobe?  I took an inexpensive black thrift store blazer and added a few embellishments to give it a whimsical flair, perfect for your fun night out!  You could do even do this in all black if the stripes are too much for you.  The techniques would work for all kinds of blazer makeover projects.  Remember, have fun, make messes and don't forget to Make Your Mark!  xoxo

Stuff You'll Need

Black and white striped fabric

Sewing machine

Thrift store blazer

Americana Multi-Surface Satin Paints (Flamingo Pink and Cotton ball)

DecoArt Glamour Dust

E-6000 Fabri-Fuse

2 yards pink ribbon

Sequin trim

Paintbrush

1. & 2. Trace a large heart on the center of the jacket back and paint it white

3.  When dry, edge with Fabri-Fuse and glue on sequin trim

4. Fill in with DecoArt Glamour Dust to add some sparkle

5. Draw two small hearts on the front hem and paint white and then pink

6. Paint with Glamour Dust and then glue sequin trim around the edges

7.  Cut two pieces of striped fabric that are 31" x 8"

8. & 9.   Stitch the 8" sides to create two tubes

10.  Hem one side of each tube by turning 1/4" twice

11.  Gather the raw edge of each tube by pushing the fabric under the presser foot

12.  Pin the gathered edge to the end of the cuff as shown and stitch around using 1/2" seam allowance

13.  Cut 4 pieces of 30" x 3" fabric strips  

14.  & 15.  Hem each side by turning the edges 1/4" twice

16.  Gather the hemmed strips under the presser foot while stitching down the center to create ruffles

17. & 18.  Glue around the collar with Fabri-Fuse and then pin in place while the ruffles dry

What! A talking rabbit?!
