Tin Can Chandelier

Much like glass jars, I also save tin cans.  If you have any doubt in your mind, I do have hoarder tendencies!  This leafy chandelier definitely needs some beads and crystals but even in this simple incarnation, I love the way it looks.   The shadows it gives are magical!  Now, lots of folks are scared of cutting tin, and though it can be sharp and scratchy, just pop on some cheap gloves and you'll have nothing to worry about!  Also, make sure to use tin shears that cut with a serrated edge.  This keeps the edge of the tin dull so you can't cut yourself.  Give everything a second life, my amazing-creative friends, and always Make Your Mark!

A pretty, clear bulb looks best!

Drippy Boho Texture Table

This table was a challenge from top to bottom.  It almost didn't fit in my car and I was stumped at how to cover the uneven top.  I finally decided on plywood cut to size and it worked perfectly!  Then there was the question of how to paint it?  I couldn't do something boring or you wouldn't be here, right?!  I decided just to go for it with tons of color in spray bottles and DecoArt Texture Medium.  It was one of those projects that I had absolutely no idea how it would look in the end.  Truth be told, I'm still on the fence about it, but it's growing on me.  Take chances with color and texture and don't forget to Make Your Mark!

STUFF I USED
Old coffee table
Amazing Goop II Max
Americana Matte Spray Sealer/Finisher
DecoArt Texture Medium in Bright Gold and Aquamarine
Palette knife
DecoArt Fleur Medallion Stencil
Americana Decor Chalky Finish in Reminisce, Treasure, Bestow & Victorian
 HERE'S HOW
1. Glue plywood (cut to size) on top of your table with Amazing Goop II Max
*My table top was destroyed and needed a new surface
2.  Paint the base with chalky finish in Bestow
3.  Mix the Treasure chalky finish with water in a spray bottle so that it sprays easily.
 4.  Spray the sides of the table about 12" at a time
5.  Immediately spray water on the paint so that it starts to drip down the sides
6.  While that dries, paint the table top with Victorian
7.  Mix Reminisce with enough water so that it sprays easily
8. Spray the sides and edge of the table
9.  Immediately spray water on the paint so that it starts to drip down the sides
and mix with the other colors
10.  Center and adhere the Fleur Medallion stencil on the table
11. Using a palette knife, spread the Bright Gold texture medium throughout the
middle of the stencil
12.  Scoop up some Aquamarine Texture Medium and finish the edges of the stencil
blending the two colors together with the knife where they meet
*Seal when finished

Build a Weaving Loom!

It started with paper plate weaving in a circle and then I advanced to a sturdy shoe box.  It was finally time to see if I could build a little loom for my weaving addiction....and here it is.   You do need some basic power tools, but it's well worth it since you can weave until you're heart's content and then start all over again!  I've given two versions here, one with nails and one with grooves.  Both are just as effective and take about the same amount of time.  Jump in and make something that challenges you this summer and don't forget to Make Your Mark!
 Weaving magic!
I love the way these look on my table!
I used every color in the basket!
Watch how to make a loom here!
STUFF I USED
32" of 3/4" x 1 1/4" wood trim
32" of 1/2" x 1 1/4" wood trim
32" of 3/8" wood dowel
3/8" Drill bit
Hammer and 1" nails
Large blunt needle
Various colors and textures of yarn
Masking tape

1. & 2.  Cut and sand two 16" long pieces of the 3/4" thick wood trim and the 1/2" thick wood trim
3.  Mark 1" in on the 3/4" wood trim on both ends of one 16" piece
4.  Make sure your drill bit is the same size or a bit bigger than the diameter of your dowel
5.  Drill through the 1'' marks on the ends of one piece of the 3/4" thick wood trim
6. & 7. Tape the other piece of 3/4" thick trim to the drilled piece and drill 1/2 way through the 2nd piece of trim
*This hole will be the "resting" place for your wood dowel when the loom is put together
8.  Match the holes, tape the drilled pieces together and mark every 3/8" along the sides (from hole to hole) across the two pieces of trim
9.  Using a rotary tool, create 1/4" deep grooves on each 3/8" line across both pieces of trim
10.  OPTIONAL:  Instead of the rotary grooves, you can also use 1" nails every 3/8" along the edge of the trim as shown
*The nails would be hammered along the edge of the 1 1/4" side, not the 3/4" side like the grooves
11.  Square and glue the grooved pieces to the 1/2" by 1 1/4" wide wood trim as shown
12.  Measure and cut the dowels so that they are about 16" in length and make sure they slide easily in and through the drilled holes
13. & 14  Thread the grooved loom or nailed loom (with yarn) from top to bottom keeping the yarn taught as you move along
15. & 16  Tie a long piece of yarn on the dowel, thread the blunt needle
and start weaving from side to side
*Slide out the dowels and clip the yarn at the top and bottom when you're done then tie knots or use fabric glue to secure the ends

Flower Headboard Makeover

For some reason I've been seeing these headboards at yard sales and moving sales.  I guess there are just a ton of them out there!  I thought it might be fun to see if I could spruce one up a bit and give it a different look.  After a month of having one on my back porch, I finally decided on flowers!  Why not?  I mean, if you're going to toss the thing anyway you might as well see what you can do with it, right?  Remember to give things a second chance and always Make Your Mark!
Sitting in the sun....Waiting for a bedroom

*You will need 8 petals per flower so do the math
3. & 4.  Cut and sand leaves and 3" x 3" squares
*2 leaves and 1 square per flower
5. - 7. Paint the petals in Americana Decor Outdoor Living in Garden Party, the 3" squares Harvest and the leaves in Lily Pad

Green Faux Marble Table

One day I will have 11 living rooms so I can showcase all of my favorite coffee table DIYs!  This one I'm keeping even if I have to rent storage space for it!  I decided to jump on the flow painting trend AGAIN and create a faux marble, malachite looking table on an old thrift store table top I had in my stash.  Since I didn't have a base, I created one with some simple wood pieces.  That said, if you find a table with a base that works, skip the base building part and just get to the painting!  Remember to try everything and always Make Your Mark!
 I'm in LOVE!
Might be too pretty to fill with my stuff!
On second thought!
Watch how to make this table here!
STUFF I USED
Americana Multi Surface Satins in Greens, Metallic Gold, Cream & Black
2" Wood Screws
1" x 4" Pine Boards
1" x 15" Wood Round
Thrift Store 36" Table Top
Tacklife Sander, Drill & Jigsaw
 HERE'S HOW
1. - 3.  Measure, mark, cut & sand eight 19" long 1" x 4" pine boards
4.  Mark the 1" x 15" wood round into 8 equal pie pieces
5.  Glue the eight 19" pine boards on each of the sections with Amazing Goop II Max
and let dry
*Prop the boards upright with soup cans so they don't move while they dry
6. & 7.  When the boards are dry, flip the table, drill through the base into the pine boards and then screw each board to the base with a 2" wood screw
8.  Paint the entire base with Americana Decor Metallics in Vintage Brass
9. & 10. Fill plastic cups with Americana Decor Metallics in your color scheme
*I used Green Beret, Turf Green, Leprechaun, Vanilla Shake, Gold & Black Tie
11.  Paint the edge of the table top in Leprechaun (or any color you want)
12.  Drip the paints around the table top one by one
13.  Tilt the table to get the marbled effect until you're happy
14.  Edge the table with a metallic gold paint marker when it's dry
15.  Paint the edge of the table with more Vintage Brass
16.  Mix a 1 pint box of Glaze Coat 2 part epoxy resin, pour it on the table top and distribute with a sponge brush
17.  Pop the bubbles with a long arm lighter OR a small torch
*Cover and let the resin cure over night
18.  Using a generous amount of Amazing Goop II Max, glue the table top on top of the 8 wood pine pieces and let dry
Green and gorgeous!

Woven Wall Hanging

I have an addiction to colorful, 99c store, polyester yarn.  I can't help it.  I see it and I load up!  Well, it finally got to the point that I had to do something with it or it would just take over my craft house.  I grabbed a book called Weave This by Frances Kletz and Brooke Dennis for inspiration and devoured all of the amazing techniques they shared and came up with these little numbers.  Truth be told, at first I thought this might get a little boring, but after I allowed myself to relax and get into the rhythm, I started to truly enjoy myself.  Remember to check out all the wonderful books out there for inspiration (not just the internet) and always Make Your Mark!
A more traditional "over under" weave
 My crazy version!

Watch how I made mine here!
STUFF I USED
1" and 1/2" wood trim to make the frame
99c store yarn
Cotton fabric
HERE'S HOW
1. Glue your wood pieces together to make a frame
*Mine was 14" long by 12" wide but you can make yours any size you want
2. & 3.  Paint the frame with Americana Acrylics and sand the edges for a weathered look
4.  Wrap the frame lengthwise about 40 times using 2 different colors of yarn
5.  Thread your large blunt needle with about 48" of yarn and start weaving at the edge of your frame
*Don't worry about counting, just keep going over and under every 2, 3, 4 or 5 strands of yarn
6.  When you get to the end, go around the side of the frame and weave back the other way
*You will not be removing your woven piece from this frame, it's part of the project
7.  When you get to the end of your first color, tie on another color and keep going
8. Add in some textured, fluffy yarns
9. & 10.  Rip cotton fabric into 1/4" strips and weave them in, too
11.  Try two different colors of yarn together
12.  When you're finished weaving, create 30" bundles of yarn to tie around the base of the frame to hang as fringe
13.  Wrap the tassel maker about 60 times using 2 different colors of yarn
14. Slip yarn between the loops of yarn and tie a knot at the top
15.  Slip 2 strands of yarn through the slit and tie the tassel at the neck,
trim and slip off of the tassel maker
16.  Add several finished tassels to the sides of the woven frame and hang the entire piece from more yarn and a center tassel
Done!

No rules, just have fun!
