Trash to Treasure Table DIY

To celebrate "Trash to Treasure Month" I'm turning some discarded chairs into beautiful stenciled side tables with just a little paint and plywood.  Wood chairs make the perfect set of table legs and you would be surprised at how many chairs get tossed that are perfect for this project.  I'm using these on my front porch this summer but might bring them inside for a party....We'll see!  Remember to give things a second chance and always Make Your Mark!

STUFF I USED

Old wood chairs

Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Woodland Green and True Teal

1/2" thick plywood

Amazing Goop II Max

Americana Decor Metallics in Vintage Brass

Jigsaw and Sander

Masking tape

Fleur Medallion stencil from DecoArt

 HERE'S HOW

1. Draw a line just above the base of the chair along the back

2. & 3.  Cut off the back of the chair with a jigsaw and then sand

4.  Cut 20" x 20" squares for the table tops

5.  Trace and cut 4" wide 20" long scalloped trim for the sides of the table tops

6. Sand each piece so they're nice and finished

7. & 8. Glue the pieces on the sides of each 20" x 20" table top using Amazing Goop II Max

and let dry

9.  Center the chair legs on the base of the table top and glue together with more

10. & 11. When dry, paint the base of each table with Woodland Green and True Teal

12.  Paint the table tops with Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Grey Taupe

13.  Using 1" wide masking tape, adhere strips all around the scalloped sides of each table

14.  Paint more Gray Taupe on each side of each piece of tape

*This allows the taupe paint to seep under the tape, create a 

perfectly crisp barrier for your stripe color

15.  Paint black in between each strip of tape and remove the tape when dry

16.  Go over each edge with a metallic gold paint marker

17.  & 18.  Using Americana Decor Metallics in Vintage Brass, stencil the DecoArt Fleur Medallion in the center of each table and on each corner

Roadside Rescue Chair Makeover

Do you ever just pull over to the curb and check out a pile of furniture ready for the heap?  I do it all the time!  I've found some amazing pieces casually tossed out by people who were moving, redecorating or just plain tired of something that was in great condition.  These discarded pieces are the perfect canvas for every crazy idea I want to try...because they are free.  Free equals fearless in my book!  This chair looked so sad outside of a local law firm in my neighborhood and I had to bring it home just to play around with some new techniques and to see if I could change the vinyl up a bit. It's not totally my style, but I'm still pretty happy with the results.  Don't be afraid to dumpster dive and always try to Make Your Mark!

STUFF I USED

An old vinyl upholstered chair

DecoArt Patent Leather Paint in Turquoise

Americana Decor Stencils

Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Keepsake and Bestow

Americana Decor Light Satin Varnish

Americana Decor Metallics in Vintage Brass

HERE'S HOW

*Before you start make sure to remove all dirt and dust

1.  Paint the leather with DecoArt Patent Leather in Turquoise

2.  Paint the wood with chalky finish in Keepsake

3.  Coat the chalky finish with Light Satin Varnish and let dry

4.  Paint over the details with chalky finish in Besto

5. & 6.  Wipe away the Bestow before it dries with a rag to expose the details

*The Bestow will fill in the cracks and highlight any details & creases

7.  Stencil the seat with Vintage Brass

8. Stencil the upper part of the legs with more Vintage Brass

I may put this back in front of the law firm where I found it.....Just to see if they will love it again!

Roadside Rescue Nightstand Makeover

I can't do it....I can't pass up a piece of perfectly good furniture on the side of the road.  I at least have to TRY to spruce it up.  Hey, if it doesn't work out, I can always put it back outside again, right?  This little nightstand looked so lonely when I saw it on my street corner and because it was so kooky, I decided to go nuts with it.  I discovered something amazing while working on it, too......the new Americana Decor Satin Enamels will paint over ANYTHING and make it look brand new.  Remember to have fun, rescue furniture and always Make Your Mark!

Stuff You'll Need

Metallic Lustres in Silver Spark

Old nightstand

Americana Decoupage

Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Charcoal Gray

Fabric to match the paint

Butcher paper and crayon

Here's How

1.  Remove the hardware

2. & 3.  Trace the pattern of the face of the drawers on butcher paper by rubbing crayon along the design

4.  Pin on fabric and cut out

5.  Paint the entire nightstand with Satin Enamels and let dry

6. - 8.  Apply Americana Decoupage to the face of the drawer (where the fabric will be placed) and apply the fabric to the drawer.

9.  Coat the fabric with more decoupage

10. & 11.  Add shimmer to the details and handles by rubbing them with Metallic Lustres 

in Silver Spark

12.  If you want, line the fabric with a silver paint marker

Roadside Rescue! From Headboard to Bench!

Not too long ago I found an amazing headboard on the street and dragged it up 3 flights of stairs to my house.  Yes, my neighbors looked at me AGAIN with those judging eyes, but I had a plan!  I was going to turn this headboard into a colorful bench for my yard and that is exactly what I did....

It was a much easier project than I thought it would be, too!  I still have to find a few matching pillows, but I'm pretty happy with the results so far!

The sad, lonely, abandoned headboard

YOU'LL NEED

An old headboard

Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint

20" x 80" x 1" birch plywood (seat)

*80" was the width of my headboard so measure accordingly

2 pieces 1" x 4" x 80" pine board (to frame seat)

3 pieces 1" x 4" x 20" pine board (to frame seat)

4 pieces 2" x 2" x 18" pine board (legs)

1 box of 1 3/4" long wood screws

Drill

Paintbrush

Dropcloth

Screw the 1" x 4" x 80" pine boards to each side of the 20" x 80" birch ply seat

Slide the 1" x 4" x 20" pine boards on each side of the seat and screw in place

Slide the 3rd 1" x 4" x 20" pine board 2" away from the center of the seat and screw in place

*This is for support

Put screws on the sides and on the top of the bench to keep everything in place

Next we are adding 3 legs on the front of the bench

Screw the 2" x 2" x 18" pieces on the inside corners of one side of the seat

Screw a 3rd 2" x 2" x 18" in the center of the first two 

Screw the 4th 2" x 2" x 18" leg in the center on the other side

*You will have 3 legs on one side and 1 leg in the center on the other side

Flip the seat upright on it's legs and screw the headboard to the side with one leg

For my bench I mixed red and blue chalky finish paint to make a deep purple 

I painted the outer frame, legs and bench face purple

I painted the details and seat in two different colors of orange
